Worley Students Experience Learning Through the Socratic Seminar

Maria Held loves using the Socratic Seminar strategy with her students at Worley Middle School.

“I see myself as the facilitator of the intellectual conversations of the students,” said Held, a National Board Certified Teacher. “They are feeding off of one another and delving into the text rather than just listening to me explain it.”

A Socratic Seminar is a questioning and thinking strategy in which you get students to talk about a text. The method is named after Greek philosopher Socrates who was the first to utilize the seminars.

According to Held, because the whole point of a Socratic seminar is to think and to question, it helps students learn to think independently, to read, understand and write about the required text.
