Riverdale High School senior Alexis Stort shared the stage with individuals like Sally-Ann and Robin Roberts and organizations like the American Red Cross and United Way at the inaugural Winn-Dixie Resilience Awards.

The Winn-Dixie Resilience Awards are for individuals who have made a significant contribution in the rebuilding, rebirth, and revitalization of the Gulf Coast area over the past 10 years. Stort was honored in the Junior Visionaries Category, which awards influential youth who are making a difference in their communities.

“Serving others helps me put my life into perspective and makes me feel better,” said Stort, who received a plaque designed by award-winning local artist Terrance Osborne and a $1,000 Winn-Dixie gift card.

An officer in the Riverdale High School Air Force JROTC, Stort is an integral part of the community service planning group and provides a great deal of leadership to her peers on campus. She became involved in community service work after Hurricane Katrina with her middle school’s Beta Club chapter. A tough time for many, Stort continued to give back because she knew there were other people going through worse circumstances than her own.

Her list of volunteer activities now includes helping with the Harahan Elementary Family Fun Math Night, the Children’s Hospital Toy Drive, and the Second Harvest Food Drive. She also bakes cookies for St. Joseph’s, volunteers for the animal shelter, helps organize her school’s annual blood drive, and serves on the school’s flag detail.

“The mission of AFJROTC is to ‘Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community,'” said Riverdale High Principal Danielle Yunusah. “Alexis is the epitome of this mission statement. She leads by example, is always willing to help in any way, and does it all with a smile.”
