Two New Charter Schools to Offer More Choices for Jefferson Parish Families Beginning Fall 2013

The Jefferson Parish School Board formalized contracts with two nonprofit groups that will open new charter schools for the 2013-14 school year in Jefferson Parish. The Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy (KDHSA) will serve students in grades pre-kindergarten (PK) to 6, while the Young Audiences Charter School will serve students in grades kindergarten to 3. Both schools will open in August 2013.

“We are continuing to transform education in Jefferson Parish with the addition of these two charter schools to our district,” said Superintendent Dr. James Meza, Jr. “The Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy and the Young Audiences Charter School will help JPPSS provide more educational options to the families in Jefferson Parish.”

KDHSA will be located on the former campus of the Maggiore Elementary School at 2504 Maine Avenue in Kenner. The school is open enrollment, with preference given to students who reside in the geographic boundaries of the school and in the city of Kenner. The school, which will provide a health and science focused curriculum to its students, expects to have an enrollment of 390 students in grades PK-6 for its first year. Over the next two years, the school will add grades 7 and 8.

While the initial application period for admissions to KDHSA has passed, the school is still accepting applications for available seats in the fifth grade. For all other grade levels, students may submit an application and be placed on the waitlist. The application is available online at http://discoveryhsf.org/join-our-community/admissions. KDHSA is also seeking educators to join its staff, and interested educators can apply online at http://discoveryhsf.org/join-our-community/faculty-and-staff-applications.

Young Audiences Charter School will be located on the former campus of Kate Middleton Elementary School at 1407 Virgil Street in Gretna. In its first year, the arts-focused school will serve grades K-3 with a total of 388 students. Young Audiences plans to add a grade every year culminating with the eighth grade in the 2018-19 school year and a total of 813 students.

The school is currently accepting applications for students entering grades K-3 who reside in Jefferson Parish. More information may be found on its website at www.yacharterschool.org or by emailing charter@ya4la.org.
