Two JPPSS Students Pen Award Winning Essays in Senator Morrell’s Holiday Contest

Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) students swept the high school categories in a recent essay contest that stretched across multiple parishes. Jefferson Chamber Foundation Academy freshman Jahmaal Mason and East Jefferson High junior Caitlan Oeberst won their categories in Louisiana State Senator JP Morrell’s holiday essay contest.

“I would like to congratulate all of the students who submitted entries and thank all of the parents and teachers who supported them,” said Senator Morrell, who represents District 3. “This year we have more entries than ever, with more than 135 essays. So many of them were thoughtful and well-written that it was difficult to choose winners.”

Senator Morrell presented winners with a Samsung Tab during awards ceremonies at each school. The contest was open to students in Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard Parish schools. Broken into K-4, 5-8, 9-10, and 11-12 grade categories, entrants were asked what advice they’d offer Santa’s reindeer on getting along with Rudolph, who is different because his nose is red. This simple prompt got students to think about acceptance and learning to appreciate differences.
