Time Capsule Opening a Time to Reminisce for Close-Knit JPPSS Family

Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) Title I and federal programs employees past and present gathered at the JPPSS Administration Building recently to open a time capsule that was sealed in 1990. While unveiling items sealed inside the capsule 25 years ago led to excitement and curiosity, being in the company of so many familiar faces made the day even more special for those in attendance.

“We have cried together. We have laughed together. We have shared together,” former JPPSS Title I Director Margie Loud Zeno told her many former colleagues during the event on September 4. “We’ve always been a family.”

JPPSS Chief of Staff Germain Gilson presided over the event, and Superintendent Isaac G. Joseph welcomed guests to the intimate gathering. Both are past directors of Title I.

“It is an honor to be serving as superintendent at the time this capsule is being opened 25 years later,” said Joseph. “In the old building as we use to enter the building from the back, there was always a placard out there by a tree.”

Gilson read off the names of all past Title I directors. When she got to Clara T. Byes, Gilson added “who happened to have been my first grade principal.”

“I’m deeply honored to be in the group of these very esteemed professionals and educators in our district,” said Gilson.

The actual opening of the capsule brought back even more memories for those in attendance. Zeno shared a number of humorous stories from her time with JPPSS, as did many of the current and former JPPSS employees who were there.
