Thirteen JPPSS Students Named 2015 National Merit Semifinalists

natlmerit-webThirteen students in Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) have been named as semifinalists in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

In order to be considered for the program, students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To become a semifinalist, students must be the top scorers in their state.

“We are very proud of our students who have been named semifinalists,” said Superintendent Dr. James Meza. “Our hard working and high achieving students are very deserving of this prestigious honor and we wish them luck as they continue to the finalist stage.”

Representing JPPSS are six students from Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, five from Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy, and two from Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies.

Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the level of finalists. Approximately 90 percent of students are expected to attain the finalists standing, with more than half winning scholarships. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced February 2015.
