Technology Brings a Smile to Special Needs Students

Students at Marrero Middle School who have autism were all smiles recently as they discovered the wonders of technology.

Principal Christina Conforto said that the school wrote a proposal to receive iPads from the district, specifically to be used by the school’s autistic students. When the devices were awarded to Marrero Middle, the school celebrated with a special recognition event for their students.

“The device is really great because the students love manipulatives and it helps with their learning,” Conforto said. “We’re really trying to provide an individual education for all of our students.”

District IV board member Pat Tovrea joined the celebration.

“I had the opportunity to visit the special needs class and I saw that they were working with crayons and chalk,” said Tovrea. “I thought that it would be great to integrate the iPad into that learning.”

The highlight for Tovrea was watching the children’s faces light up when they saw the equipment.

“It was great to watch them have fun learning.”
