Schneckenburger Elementary Cuts Ribbon on its United Way Club Connect Reading Oasis

Mr. and Mrs. Bob Merrick read to Schneckenburger Elementary students in their new Reading Oasis.

An exciting community partnership led to a celebration and a host of new reading resources for the students at Schneckenburger Elementary. The school held a United Way Club Connect and Early Grade Reading Initiative Grand Launch on August 20. The program provides books, reading resources, and family engagement tools to support student literacy goals in grades K-3.

The event at Schneckenburger served as a ribbon cutting ceremony for the school’s new resources and their Reading Oasis, which includes hundreds of new books, a listening center, and furniture. Students also get access to digital books and other innovative educational tools. Latter and Blum Inc. owner and CEO Bob Merrick read to the students in their new Reading Oasis, and was one of the special guests on hand. In 2014 Merrick pledged $1 million to the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, becoming the first person in the state to join United Way’s Million Dollar Roundtable.

Schneckenburger Elementary students added to the festivities of the day by dressing as their favorite character from a book and donating money to United Way. The event was also covered on

Pittman Elementary also held a similar ceremony this year for their new Reading Oasis.

United Way Club Connect is a national reading initiative that includes United Way, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and Scholastic.
