New Kitchen Gives Bonnabel Culinary Arts Students Hands-On Experience

A new Pro-Start kitchen was recently dedicated at Bonnabel Magnet Academy.

“Pro-Start is basically culinary arts, but in this class, I’m learning more than in any other classes that I’ve previously taken,” said Bonnabel student Grandville Hudson.

Students remain in the program at Bonnabel for two years.

Pro-Start teacher Emile Maydrich said that in the first year, students are introduced to the culinary arts and the second year builds upon that foundation.

“Our new Pro-Start kitchen has six stations,” said Maydrich. “This gives all students to be hands-on at the same time.”

Jefferson Parish School Board president Larry Dale said he appreciates the collaboration with the Louisiana Restaurant Association in this Pro-Start Program.

“We know that many students are not interested in attending a four year university so that is why these types of programs are important,” Dale said. “We want our students to be successful and viable in their careers.”
