Metairie Academy Second-Grader Is a Champion

Met Academy Sophia

Metairie Academy second-grader, Sophia Liriano, has been chosen to represent Louisiana in the Champions Across America Program.

The program highlights a child who has battled and overcome a serious injury or illness who was treated at one of the 210 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals across the country.

“We are so proud of Sophia,” said principal Helen Blanke. “She is a cheerful, brave and caring child.  She is hard working and faces all of her challenges with a smile.”

Sophia was born with a rare heart and organ defect called heterotaxia. She has had four open heart surgeries and three stomach surgeries at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

The family will travel to Washington, D.C. in November to tell her story on Capital Hill and will go to Disney World for a little rest and relaxation.
