Message from the Superintendent: August 2015

19842565873_90d290e3da_zI would like to start this month’s message by thanking our many stakeholders for the role they played in an outstanding start to the school year. From standard first week of school concerns, like bus assignments and student enrollment, to issues beyond our control, like the weather, I appreciate your patience, professionalism, and poise during this always busy time of year. Know that we are here to support you during what we know will be a successful 2015-2016.

I’ve mentioned the JPPSS Discipline Task Force during a number of public forums over the past few months. Comprised of a diverse range of JPPSS stakeholders (administrators, teachers, district personnel, community members, board members, and law enforcement), this team’s goal is to help facilitate fair and consistent discipline practices across the district. Chief Student Support Officer Denise Carpenter presented their plan during the August board meeting. Our school system should be the first choice of parents and students. Maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for students and teachers is foundational to achieving that goal.

The Task Force’s four subcommittees (communications, law enforcement, policies and procedures, and professional development) set targeted goals they will meet over the next few months. We will keep you informed as we begin to implement this plan at our schools and in our communities.

Over time and through patience and consistent practice, this plan can serve as the framework for an encouraging, welcoming, and positive school culture. Together, I know we will reach our goals.

Warm Regards,

Isaac G. Joseph
