The Jefferson Parish School Board approved the 2017-18 academic calendar during its March meeting.
Teachers report for their first day on August 7, the first day for students in grades 1-12 is August 10, late take-in days have been switched to early release days (students will be dismissed 2.5 hours early), and the final day of school for students is May 24.
The calendar was created with the input of 6,621 JPPSS stakeholders. A calendar survey was completed by 1,962 parents, 2,437 teachers, and 1,100 staff members, among others. The calendar survey, which was opened to the public February 1-10, 2017, gave stakeholders three calendar options. Option A won with just over 60% of the vote. The three calendar options were originally developed in January by a calendar committee of JPPSS teachers, administrators, staff members, and stakeholders.
The approved calendar meets all state requirements and maximizes the amount of uninterrupted instructional time. The calendar may need to be adjusted when the Louisiana Department of Education releases its 2018 assessment schedule.
