JPPSS Appoints New Executive Director of English Language Learners

Karina CastilloThe Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) today announced the appointment of Karina Castillo as the district’s new executive director of English language learners (ELL), a position that will be responsible for overseeing programs and strategies that serve the district’s growing population of English language learners.

Castillo is currently the principal of Harold Keller Elementary School in Metairie, a diverse campus with students who speak 18 different languages and come from 29 different countries. Prior to joining JPPSS, she spent eight years as an educator at the elementary, middle, and high school levels with the Houston Independent School District.

“Mrs. Castillo brings to this position both experience working directly with large populations of ELL students and a proven track record of improving student outcomes as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal,” said Superintendent James Meza, Jr. “Her leadership as the executive director of English language learners will be critical as we continue our efforts to provide ELL students with the necessary support to ensure their academic success.”

“Serving as principal at Keller Elementary has been the unquestioned highlight of my career, and I have been so fortunate to experience a wonderful partnership with the students, staff, and families in the Keller community,” said Castillo. “I am thrilled to accept this opportunity to work more closely with our ELL students and their families from across Jefferson Parish.”

Castillo holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Louisiana State University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

She will officially assume her new position on July 1, 2014 and will report directly to Chief Academic Officer Michelle Blouin-Williams.
