Jefferson Parish Students Win State Art Contest

Jefferson Parish students win in Louisiana Youth Art Month Flag Design Contest sponsored by Louisiana Art Education Association (LAEA). Harahan Elementary second grader Ashley Armelin placed first in the K-2nd division. Samantha Barahona, also of second grade at Harahan, received Honorable Mention. At Airline Park Elementary, fourth grader Andres Gallardo placed 2nd in the 3rd-5thgrade division.

The winning designs and all entries from Harahan Elementary, Airline Park Elementary, Hazel Park Elementary, and Washington Montessori will be exhibited at the Louisiana state capitol for Artists in the Capitol Day on Monday, May 10, 2010.

Winning students will receive Senate and House commendation certificates.  Awards to the winners will also be presented by LAEA.  The Louisiana Art Education Association sponsors this event in conjunction with the National Art Education Association’s “FLAGS ACROSS THE U.S.  FLYING HIGH.” Their goal is to help promote the visual arts in our national and state capitols.  Schools throughout the U.S. are holding flag design competitions.

Louisiana Art Education Association will select a design to represent the state of Louisiana, which will be made into a full size flag and flown in Washington, D.C. during March, Youth Art Month.
