Dance Challenge Rescheduled for April 29 at 6 p.m.

More than 320 Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) students from 18 elementary schools will participate in Martin Marino’s 9th annual Dance Challenge on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 p.m. The event is free to the public and will be held at the Pontchartrain Center, 4545 Williams Blvd. in Kenner.

The Dance Challenge was originally scheduled earlier in April, but it was canceled due to inclement weather that left the venue without power.

Founded by former district 6 board member Marino, the Dance Challenge is the first program of its kind in the greater New Orleans area to feature elementary students performing the major dance styles of ballroom dancing. This year, students will perform swing, salsa, tango, and waltz in both couple and team competitions under the direction of six professional dance instructors. In addition to student competitions, the event will feature professional shows and exhibitions.

“The Dance Challenge is the culmination of the hard work put in by both the dance instructors and the students, as our six instructors have spent the past school year teaching ballroom dance to more than 900 JPPSS students during their physical education classes,” said Marino. “We are proud to continue this program in Jefferson Parish, and we are grateful for the support from the board, school leaders, parents, sponsors, and community members.”

Participating JPPSS elementary schools include Bissonet Plaza, Bridgedale, Butler, Collins, Dolhonde, Ellis, Gretna No. 2 Academy, Harahan, Hearst, Jefferson, Kenner Discovery, Marrero Academy, Matas, Pittman, Pitre, Schneckenburger, Solis, and Strehle.
