Higgins Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Soccer demonstrations, traditional dancing, and sampling authentic candy were just a few of the activities L.W. Higgins High School students enjoyed during the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Coordinated by soccer coach Francisco Castillo and Spanish teachers Warren Jones and Maria Schneider, the goal of the celebration was to recognize the importance of the various cultures represented in Higgins’ diverse population.

Classroom lessons about the contributions of Hispanics were taught in advance of the event. Students learned the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish and read biographies of important Hispanic leaders in the United States.

“We want to have understanding amongst our students from different cultures and to eliminate any stereotypes and myths,” said Jones. “We also want them to see how we all interconnect through contributions such as music, cuisine and dance.”
