Gretna No. 2 Teacher Named Louisiana History Teacher of the Year by Gilder Lehrman Institute

Kathleen FaheryKathleen Fahery, social studies gifted teacher at Gretna No. 2 Academy, has been named the Louisiana History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, a nonprofit organization devoted to the improvement of history education.

“I would like to congratulate Ms. Fahery on this honor and thank her for engaging students with dedication and creativity,” said Superintendent Dr. James Meza, Jr. “She is well deserving of this recognition for her outstanding work in the classroom.”

Fahery was chosen as the State History Teacher of the Year by a panel of teachers, administrators, and academics from Louisiana for her use of primary documents in the classroom, her career achievements in education, and her abilityto inspire her students. She will receive a $1,000 cash award, a certificate of recognition, and an archive of books and historical resources that will be presented to the school library in her name.

As an added honor, Gretna No. 2 Academy will be named a Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School and will receive invitations to regional forums with noted historians, access to an exclusive section of Gilder Lehrman web site, priority access to the teacher seminars and traveling exhibitions, and free mailings of classroom materials.

In the coming weeks, Fahery’s application will be reviewed by a panel of judges for the national competition. The National History Teacher of the Year will be named in the fall.
