The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955, and the National Achievement Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students.

Each year, 1.5 million students compete in the National Merit program and 160,000 students compete in the National Achievement Scholarship program. The National Merit Finalists are part of a group of 15,000 nationally who advanced to finalist standing, and the National Merit Semifinalists are part of approximately 1,300. In order to be considered for a scholarship, students must be a top scorer on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists must then fulfill several requirements to advance to the level of finalist.
