East Jefferson High School Teacher Wins Pepsi Prize To Study Shrimp Farming

East Jefferson High School teacher Suzan Thompson has been awarded $25,000 as part of the Pepsi Refresh Project’s Do Good for the Gulf Program that looks to finance ideas that can benefit local communities throughout the country. Pepsi Refresh Project’s Do Good for the Gulf Program began in response to the BP oil spill.

Thompson, who is an environmental science teacher at East Jeff, has developed a plan to study shrimp and oyster farming to teach displaced farmers in Grand Isle how to grow seafood farms on their own property.

Students in Thompson’s class will build and test model seafood farms at East Jefferson. During the spring semester, Thompson and her students will travel to Grand Isle to demonstrate the model farms and help farmers apply for start-up funding.

Thompson is already at work writing another grant to install solar panels on East Jefferson High School.
