Dolhonde Students Compete in Annual Speech Competition

Dolhonde_SpeechOn November 20, 2014, fifth grade students at Ella Dolhonde Elementary competed in the school’s fourth annual speech competition night, an event founded and sponsored by Fred Parker, general manager of New South Parking at the New Orleans Airport. The event featured a catered dinner for students and parents followed by the live competition. School board member Larry Dale served as one of the judges.

In order to advance to the nighttime competition, all fifth graders at Dolhonde first competed in classroom speech competitions. Students were encouraged to choose a famous American who has given a public speech, then assume the role of that person during the competition, emulating behaviors and dress.

“Every year, the speech night has become more and more competitive,” said Jeannine Wegener, a fifth grade teacher at Dolhonde. “It’s immensely rewarding for all involved.”

A total of 19 students participated in the speech competition night. Nine students were awarded trophies for their performance.

“We are grateful to our speech competition night presenter, New South Parking, and our community sponsors Joseph Electric, the Sloan Group, and GNO Communications for helping making the event possible,” said Lisa Savage, principal of Dolhonde Elementary.
