ESL Program : ELL Parent Resources

The English Language Acquisition Department (OELL) exists to ensure that children whose first language is not English, and/or who are limited in English, successfully participate in an educational system conducted only in English. The goal is to teach English language learners as rapidly as possible so that they can fully participate in all academic programs offered in the district.

The goal of the ESL Parenting Centers is to provide parents with the tools to help their children be successful. Parent Liaisons are bilingual and provide families with information about a variety of community resources available to them in their native language.

Recommendations for the Parents of ELLs

The OELL makes the following recommendations to help your child adjust to school in the district. The district has an obligation to provide school
information available in their native languages, interpreters are available. Ask the school. If you need help with communication, call 349-7776.

  • Review The Procedures and Policies for Parents and Students handbook with your child (translated into Spanish, Vietnamese and Arabic)
  • Read the school system calendar.
  • Use the Parent Portal to obtain daily updates of your child’s grades, attendance, school calendars, and schedule.
  • Create and enforce a homework routine.
  • Communicate with the teachers and bilingual paraprofessionals every 9 weeks.
  • Read with your child daily. Your child’s first language will help your child on learning English.
  • Visit the community library regularly.
  • Expect to receive interim reports every 3rd and 6th weeks and report cards each nine-weeks of each marking period. Ask for them if you do not receive them.
  • Schedule conferences with your child’s teachers. Request an interpreter if needed. You can request a conference any time during the school year.
  • ASK questions if you need more information. All of your questions are important.
  • Volunteer at your child’s school.
  • Complete and return all forms from the school.
