Chateau Students Get the GIST

Chateau-GISTEarlier this month, five students from Chateau Estates Elementary participated in the GIST Program at Tulane University.

GIST, which stands for Girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at Tulane, offers girls in fifth through seventh grades the opportunity to meet and work with women role models in the various scientific fields.

In order to be chosen for the program, participants were required to submit an application and an essay. The Chateau students selected for the program recently toured Newcomb’s campus and listened to presentations from Tulane students and professors about why they chose science as a profession. The girls then took part in hands-on science experiments.

Chateau principal Colleen Winkler said that her students especially enjoyed the experiment involving robotics.

“After this experience, the girls want to go to college and study science,” she said.

Taking part were Areej Sidhoo, Chelsea Velasquez, Sara Cheema, Azucena Cruz and Andrea Aguilar.
