Audubon Elementary Student Saves Family from a House Fire

Audubon Elementary student DeShawn Labarriere is being hailed a hero for his actions that saved a family from a house fire the night of January 13.

DeShawn was sleeping on the sofa at his babysitter’s home when he awoke to the sounds of fire. He proceeded to use his blanket as a shield and started banging on doors to wake the home’s occupants who all escaped safely. DeShawn learned about fire safety from his late grandfather, a longtime Kenner volunteer firefighter.

Kenner firefighters and officials from the mayor’s office honored DeShawn at Audubon’s Morning Assembly on January 18th. They praised his quick thinking and fire safety knowledge with saving the lives of five people. DeShawn received certificates and congratulations from Kenner’s fire chief, representatives from the mayor’s office, and principal Wendy Savelle. The Audubon family and JPPSS is proud of DeShawn’s brave behavior!
